The giant Galapagos archipelago of volcanic origin is located more than 1000 km away from the coast of the country. Here is where Darwin’s Theory of Evolution was born. The archipelago is formed by 13 large islands, 6 smaller islands and a series of islets, where hundreds of endemic species are found, such as the giant tortoise and the blue-footed atobá.
The capital of the country Quito has a beautiful and preserved historic centre, and is also the starting point for the famous Monument Mitad del Mundo, which means ‘the middle of the world’ and it is just 35 km below the Equator. Nearby tourists can visit the Avenida dos Volcões – the volcanos avenue, a place full of imposing formations of nature, such as Cotopaxi volcano.
The famous Panama Hat is produced in Cuenca, the third largest city in the country, recognized as World Cultural Heritage, with its traditional red roofs.
Another must-see is the city of Guayaquil, the most important port in the country. This metropolis on the banks of the Guayas River is a large Ecuadorian shopping destination.
